NEW BRUNSWICK — A Somerset man has been apprehended and charged in connection with the shooting of a 22-year-old New Brunswick man, who remained in critical but stable condition at a city hospital, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced Sunday.
Mohamad Kamara, 26, of the Somerset section of Franklin Township was charged on Friday, Jan. 18, after he voluntarily went to New Brunswick Police headquarters. He subsequently was charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery of the 22-year-old New Brunswick man, whose name was still being withheld.
The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after he was shot inside a home on Somerset Street on Jan. 15.
Kamara remained in custody Sunday awaiting bail, which had not yet been set.
Police began an investigation after receiving a call at 5:26 p.m. on Jan. 15 and were dispatched to the home on Somerset Street, where the victim was found.
As police arrived, they saw a man fleeing the scene, and chased and apprehended him about six blocks away.
The suspect, Lewis Hooper, 28, of Highland Park, was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.
Police also arrested and charged Chinikka Lockhart, 25, who was apprehended near the scene of the shooting. She has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.
Hooper and Lockhart remained in custody Sunday.
Charges were filed during an investigation by Detective Kenneth Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Jose Rodriguez of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation has determined that the shooting was part of a robbery conspiracy, and was not a random act, but authorities did not release additional details .

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Kamara, Hooper and Lockhart are accusations and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
