Breast Care Connection Program at RWJUH Reaccredited

NEW BRUNSWICK – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s (RWJUH) Breast Care Connection, a program that guides patients through all aspects of breast health care, has been reaccredited for three years by The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

The NAPBC is a consortium of national, professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and the monitoring of outcomes for patients with diseases of the breast. NAPBC accreditation is granted only to centers that voluntarily have committed to provide the best in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and comply with established NAPBC standards.

“Working with the University Radiology Group, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and community and regional physicians, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital provides an excellent patient-centered breast cancer program, and reaccreditation by the NAPBC validates that successful multi-disciplinary, team approach,” says Lynn Lutwin, RN, Director of Breast Care Connection.

Breast Care Connection opened in 2009 and is located in a 3,000-square-foot facility at 10 Plum St., third floor. Lutwin says it serves an average of 250 patients per month. “We are here to guide, help and educate breast cancer patients,” she adds. “I am still impressed on a daily basis by all that we are able to accomplish together.”

To achieve accreditation, each center must undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of its performance and compliance with the NAPBC standards. To maintain accreditation, centers must undergo an on-site review every three years.

At RWJUH, the NAPBC reaccreditation process started in 2012. A breast program leadership committee that includes Lutwin; David Fernandez, vice president, Oncology Services at RWJUH; Deborah Toppmeyer, M.D., Director, Stacy Goldstein Breast Cancer Center and Chief Medical Officer, CINJ, and associate professor, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS); Surgical Oncologist Thomas J. Kearney, M.D., associate professor, RWJMS; Radiation Oncologist Sharad Goyal, M.D., assistant professor, RWJMS; Diagnostic Radiologists Erin Carney-Gellella, M.D., and Gary Needell, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor, RWJMS; and Joan Quagliata, RN, OCN, adult treatment nurse at CINJ, met regularly to complete the accreditation process to demonstrate compliance with standards in areas including radiology, mammography, medical and surgical oncology, and nursing and outreach. Breast Care Connection was reaccredited through 2015.
