[OPINION] Why You Should Urge Gov. Christie To Expand Medicaid

January 11, 2013

One choice can change many lives... Faith or Fate by John Ruggiero

The clock is ticking. Governor Christie is only weeks away from announcing his state budget, and one decision that he has to make involves the expansion of Medicaid. As it currently stands, he has the opportunity to provide an affordable health care option for hundreds of thousands of currently uninsured New Jerseyans by making Medicaid expansion a part of the next state budget. In 2010, Governor Christie said that he wants everyone to have health insurance, and he wants everyone to have access to health care. This is an opportunity to work towards that reality.

Medicaid expansion would provide an affordable health coverage option to people just like you and me. Hard-working New Jerseyans who have fallen on hard times, people who have lost their jobs as a result of the economic downturn, or possibly even as a result of natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy. These are people that have paid into Medicaid for years, and now, they deserve the opportunity to receive help from this very program when they need it most. As an AARP New Jersey volunteer, I urge people to call the Governor and ask him to expand Medicaid.
