CRANFORD — Accounting is one of the largest growth occupations where jobs are expected to increase in the near future and students can prepare for related jobs through a non-credit certificate at Union County College.
The first required class, Practical Accounting, provides an overview of practices and functions for recording business transactions. Students will learn about journals, ledgers, banking, billing and invoicing. This class runs Mondays and Wednesdays from January 23 to February 11 and will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The course cost is $249. Additional classes in this certificate program will be offered following the first Practical Accounting class. Several new classes for small-to mid-sized businesses and accounting professionals will be also be offered during the spring term. Students can choose to take these classes as part of the Practical Accounting certificate program or as individual classes. A new class, Intermediate Quickbooks 2013, will teach more advanced Quickbook functions such as setting up a company, security protection, automatic functions to create and operate a general ledger, and employee payroll functions. This class will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from April 8 to 24 and will run from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.
Introduction to Quickbooks 2013 class will continue to be offered and this teaches accounting software that helps businesses and individuals organize their finances. This class will also cover how to set up charts of accounts, track payables, receivables, inventory, create invoices, operate office financial reports, and more. This class will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays from March 11 to April 4 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Both classes will be held at the College’s Elizabeth campus and cost is $249 per course.
Another new class, Fundamentals of New Jersey Taxation, is great for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of NJ taxation. A sample of topics includes taxpayer rights, deductions, interest, dividends, and amended tax returns. This class will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays May 7 to 21 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm and will take place on the College’s Cranford campus. The course cost is $210.
