There are a lot of hard-working people out there – not slackers – who lack basic healthcare coverage. People who make less than $15,000 a year and have no children do not qualify for Medicaid coverage now. Many of those residents are neighbors, family members or friends that I know and have witnessed their struggles. With mounting medical bills and the lack of funds for important doctor visits, medications and treatments it is almost impossible for them to take care of their health. They are good, hard-working people who serve you in restaurants and retail stores. They are people who provide basic care for the elderly and disabled. They are people who may cut and style your hair. They are people you see every day.
As an AARP member and someone who has the benefit of age and the wisdom that comes with age and Medicare, I can personally speak to the importance of providing access to affordable care. Gov. Christie should expand Medicaid coverage. I want to see those hard working individuals obtain the coverage they deserve.
People deserve to get a fair shot at basic coverage that so many of us take for granted. The answer is expanding Medicaid.
