Union Catholic Freshman Awarded Scholarship

SCOTCH PLAINS — Nick Birritteri of Linden has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the Eldon M. Hammeke Scholarship, Union Catholic High School announced. The scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Hammeke by his wife Grace, and is supported by the Knights of Columbus Summit Council #783, of which Mr. Hammeke was an active member. The award is presented every year to one current freshman student at a Catholic high school and is renewable for the recipient’s remaining three years at the school.

Birritteri was chosen based his successful integration into Union Catholic, good grades, and response to the call to “become all God calls you to be” at Union Catholic. He demonstrates avid enthusiasm about the beginning of his freshman year and is already a sought-after Freshman for a Day tour guide, a member of the Student Movement Against Cancer (SMAC) club, plays on the school basketball team, and is an honor roll student. Past recipients still attending Union Catholic include Sophomore Danielle Cusick of Edison, Junior Arthur Wright of Woodbridge, and Senior Brian Cautillo of Union.
