EDISON — Alex Barbet of Plainfield, a junior at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, will be one of 350 singers from the Eastern Seaboard to participate in the Mixed Chorus at a festival from April 4-7, 2013 at Mortensen Hall in the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford, Conn. After three days of rehearsals, Barbet will perform on April 7. The director of the choir is Randall Z. Stroope, a famous choral composer and choir director.
“I am particularly happy that Alex will get to perform in All-Eastern this year as the fall NJ All State concerts were canceled due to Hurricane Sandy,” said Sharon Byrne, Upper School choral music teacher. “It’s an honor to be selected for this chorus and I am very proud of him!”
Since Barbet made it into All-State Chorus last year, he was eligible to apply to be in this prestigious chorus this year and he was selected to participate in the festival, which takes place every other year. Barbet finished sixth last year in NJ All-State in the Bass II voice part.
Eligible singers in the Northeast apply to the committee and are selected based on their application. On his application, Barbet cited his other musical experience, which includes guitar performances at Explo and the Schubert Theater in New Haven, as well as his classical piano ability.
“I’m really excited,” Barbet said. “I’ve listened to some YouTube videos of previous choirs and it’s the next, next level.”
