Telephone Scam Seeks “Ransom” For Fake Kidnappings

PERTH AMBOY – City residents have been receiving phone calls requesting ransom for the safe return of family members who have supposedly been kidnapped, Perth Amboy police said in an advisory send out Thursday night.

The fake kidnapping calls are being made from the same phone number 347-891-1626, police said. The victims’ phone numbers begin with 732-423-9, followed by three random digits.

The caller asks the victim to stay on the phone while filling out a Western Union or Moneygram transfer form, according to police.

Authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact Detective Marcos Valera at 1-732-324-3876.
