Benedictine Academy To Host 7th Annual Christmas Basketball Tournament

ELIZABETH—Benedictine Academy in Elizabeth, along with the Benedictine Academy Parents Association will host the seventh annual Dr. Rosemarie Battaglia Christmas Basketball Tournament on Dec. 27, 28, 29 and 30

Girls’ varsity basketball teams from eight New Jersey high schools, including Benedictine Academy, will compete for the championship title at the event held at the school, located at 840 North Broad Street in Elizabeth. New to the event this year, girls’ junior varsity teams from four area high schools will also play in competition.

The tournament is named after Dr. Rosemarie Battaglia, who coached varsity basketball at the all-female Catholic college prep Benedictine Academy from 1954-58. Battaglia is to be honored at the Christmas Tournament on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. Her record while coaching at the all-female Catholic college prep high school was 36-4. The 1954-55 Benedictine Academy varsity basketball team was undefeated, with a 12-0 record. She has been inducted as a Hall of Famer several times including Benedictine Academy in 2004; the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 1999; and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) in 1996.

Scheduled girls’ varsity and junior varsity basketball games are as follows:
Thursday, Dec. 27– Snyder H.S. (Jersey City) vs. North 13th Street Tech – 1:30 p.m.; Newark Collegiate vs. Roselle Park H.S.- 3 p.m.; St. Vincent’s Academy (Newark) vs. Madison H.S. – 4:30 p.m.; and, Benedictine Academy vs. St. Mary’s H.S. of Elizabeth – 6 p.m. All are varsity team games.

Friday, Dec. 28- varsity consolation games at 3 and 4:30 p.m. In addition, girls’ junior varsity teams from St. Vincent’s of Newark and Elizabeth H.S. will compete at noon, followed by Lacordaire Academy vs. Madison H.S. JV at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 29– junior varsity consolation game at noon.
Varsity semi-finals will be played at 1:30 and 3 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 30– varsity consolation games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; a varsity semi-final game will be played at 12:30 p.m. Two championship games are scheduled on December 30- junior varsity at 3:30 p.m. and varsity at 5 p.m. All games will be played in the gymnasium of Benedictine Academy. Trophies will be awarded for MVP, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place teams.

Benedictine Academy is a member of the NJSIAA (New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association). Admission to the BA Christmas Basketball Tournament is $5 for adults and $3 for children and students under 18. Food and refreshments will be available. Proceeds will benefit student activities and programs at the Academy. Members of the community, along with alumnae of Benedictine Academy, are invited to the tournament.
