Pink Tie Ball Cancelled In The Wake Of Sandy

SUMMIT – The Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Jersey Affiliate announced early last week that in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, it has decided to cancel this year’s Pink Tie Ball, originally scheduled for Nov. 2 (and then rescheduled for Dec. 7). The Affiliate’s gala event has been rescheduled for next fall, Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston.

The North Jersey Affiliate is, instead, directing its efforts to assist those affected by the hurricane’s terrible devastation. “It just didn’t seem right to celebrate right now,” said Jennifer Griola, the affiliate’s executive director. “So many people in our service area are still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and we felt it was a better use of our efforts and energy to offer some help, right here in our own communities.”

The affiliate is working with one of their grantees in hard-hit Hoboken to provide them with a small grant for office supplies and to provide much-need breast health literature—their office space is now uninhabitable for several months. They are also holding a food drive to replenish the food pantries of New Jersey through the Community Food Bank. They’ve put out the word to all staff, volunteers and supporters to bring non-perishable food to their office at 44 Middle Avenue in Summit anytime Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Dec. 19.

“All of us at Komen North Jersey sincerely hope that those in our nine-county service area, and their loved ones, have not been severely impacted by this storm,” said Griola. “We know this may be a difficult time for many of those in our area, and we want our supporters to know how grateful we are for their continued friendship.”
