WATCHUNG – Mount Saint Mary Academy senior Carly Whitmer of Scotch Plains signed her college letter of intent on Tuesday, Nov. 20 in a special ceremony on the school’s campus. Whitmer, a standout swimmer on the Academy team, will attend and compete for George Washington University next school year.

“I am extremely excited to swim collegiately, and George Washington is the best place for me to do that,” said Whitmer. “The Mount has helped me develop better time-management, organization, and a great mentality that will help me tremendously in college. I feel incredibly well-prepared for what lies ahead.”

A two-time USA Academic All American, Whitmer selected George Washington not only for its athletic reputation but also for its high academic standards. “I love the balance between athletics, academics, and spending time with the team,” said Whitmer. “With an intended major in International Business, Washington D.C. is without a doubt where I want to be, and I know I will be prepared well for life after college.”

Throughout her high school career, Whitmer earned a number of individual honors, including the designation of NISCA/Speedo All American in 2010 and 2011. She was honored as a member of the All Skyland Conference, All Somerset County, and All Non Public teams in 2010, 2011, and 2012. She holds New Jersey independent school records in the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, and 400 freestyle relay. Whitmer is also the Mount Saint Mary Academy record holder in these events.

Despite her impressive list of individual accomplishments, Whitmer cites the group achievements of the Mount squad and their team chemistry as the aspects of her high school swimming experience she will miss the most.

“I am going to miss the team dynamic at Mount,” said Whitmer. “The team is so close and it’s always a lot of fun to be with everyone.”

Whitmer helped lead the Mount team to a NonPublic B State Championship during the 2010-2011 season. That same year, she was a member of the record-breaking 200 medley relay team that won the High School Meet of Champions for the first time in school history. Last season, Whitmer helped the Mount team to a second-place finish in the NonPublic B State Tournament.
