Official Vote Count Brings Surprise In Springfield Council Race

UNION COUNTY – The destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy created an unprecedented Election Day, where displaced hurricane survivors were allowed to vote by email, fax and at voting locations throughout the state. With all of the votes finally counted, Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi has certified the election results.

Springfield Democrats David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski defeated Republicans Jerome Jerry Fernandez and Marc Krauss for two council seats. Fernandez actually appeared to be the leading vote-getter according to the unofficial results available on Election Night, but once all of the votes were counted he fell five short of being elected.

In Kenilworth, Republicans Fred Pugliese and Toni K. Giordano defeated Democrats John Mauro and Kay Anne Ceceri for two seats on the Council. Giordano edged out Mauro by just 15 votes.

Jill Curran, Henry R. Varriano and Robert F. Smorol, Jr. were elected to the Clark Board of Education, upholding the unofficial Election Night results in a race where just 27 votes decided the final seat.
