RAHWAY — Members of the Rahway Fire Department served a well-deserved hot meal to the seniors at the Clifford Case Housing Complex on Wednesday, Nov. 7, after they had been left without power for more than a week because of Hurricane Sandy.

The housing complex depends on electricity, not gas, for cooking so the residents were unable to enjoy hot meals. A resident who is confined to a wheelchair could not make it downstairs the entire time as the elevators were not working.

After hearing of their situation, the firefighters had two local restaurants cater dinner for the senior building, including salad, pasta and meatballs, sausage and peppers as well as chicken parmesan chicken milanese.

F.M.B.A. Local #33 President Michael Sandhorst said “Every year we hold a fund drive to help raise funds for various events and organizations within the City of Rahway, and what better way to use some of these funds than to help our seniors who were definitely in need of assistance.”

Pat Roselli, director of the complex said “what they did was very nice, the residents truly appreciated this.”

Resident Barbara Androvich said, “I could not make it down to the dinner, so they brought the dinner up to me! The food was delicious…thank you!”

Sandhorst also said “Rahway Firefighters would like to thank first the citizens of Rahway for donating to the annual fund drive and also to Luciano’s and D’Italia’s restaurants, as they prepared the meals with little time to prepare, which we then served to the seniors.”

Rahway F.M.B.A Local #33 will host the annual John Chussler Senior Citizens Dinner on Dec. 3.There will be 2 seatings, the first at 11:30 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. All Rahway seniors are invited to attend free of charge and tickets are now available at either fire station on a first come first serve basis.
