CLARK — Students in Ms. Whittemore’s English Class at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark created mandalas that represent the main character in the novel “Peeling the Onion” in Ms. Whittemore’s English class. Students worked together to create character maps, listing important adjectives that describe the main character. The adjectives needed to be supported by events in the book. These events all had certain moods, or tone to them. These variations of tone and mood were then characterized by corresponding colors; four major colors comprised each mandala, the most predominant colors dominating the composition. This project combined both art and knowledge of literature. After the mandalas are finished, students will write an essay explaining their choices with evidence to support from the novel.
