CLARK — As the school year progresses, students in Miss Faro’s mathematics classes at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School in Clark are participating in multiplication and division computation races each week against classmates. Basic mathematical computations are a fundamental skill that all students will continue to utilize throughout all their math classes. The seventh graders are practicing their basic mathematical skills weekly.
Students are split into groups of three or four and are given one sheet of 100 multiplication or division problems per group. Each group member is to complete one row of problems and then pass the paper to the next group member. This cycle continues until all 100 problems have been solved. At this time, the group that has finished raises their hands. If all answers are correct, the group receives prize tickets that can be used for other activities in the classroom. The students thrive with the competition and each week, students are completing their computations at a faster pace.
