WOODBRIDGE-The following is from a reader after my Sept. 21 column: “Sam’s Bar and Grill, which was supposedly haunted, was on New Brunswick Avenue in Fords. Dalina’s was on Crows Mill as was Mezo’s, a small general store. Slice n Spice was a deli on New Brunswick Avenue.”
I also heard from Doug Sheehan: “I noticed your article on old bars in Woodbridge Township. I was raised in Fords, just up the street from Frank’s Tavern, which was mentioned in your article. There are two classic bars you didn’t mention: Sam’s Bar and Grill, New Brunswick Avenue, Fords and The White Birch, Route 1 and Ford Avenue, Menlo Park Terrace. I spent many a day and night (and many $$$) in those places in the 70′s.”
White Birch Inn was mentioned a week later in my Sept. 28 column.
A few more that I found from the 1930s: Middlesex Tavern, Main Street and Amboy Avenue; Family Liquor Store, Main Street; and Shady Brook Inn, Avenel.
1960s: Kenny Acres Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge on Route 9. Albea Liquors was in the Colonia Shopping center and The Spirits Shop on Inman Avenue. Beacon Liquors was on St. Georges Avenue in Avenel.
