Remembering the Past by Diane Norek Harrisonby Diane Norek Harrison

ELIZABETH-More memories from Carmella Spino Helminski from the Peterstown section, continued from my Oct. 12 column: “Family also lived nearby. Within a few blocks were aunts, uncles, cousins and our grandmother. Friends were always nearby for walking to school with or games of hide and seek, stickball, jacks, marbles, or Hopscotch played with a heel we would get from the shoemaker on Third Avenue.”

WOODBRIDGE-Memories from Diane Bodzioch: “Diane, Just finished reading your article in this week’s (Sept. 21) NJTODAY.NET. In the 60s and into the 70s in Avenel there was the Bluebird Inn on the corner of St. Georges Avenue and Lord Street and in Iselin on the corner of Middlesex Avenue and Green Street, there was Flip’s Tavern and Packaged Goods. Then there was Argyle Fish & Chips that was located on the other corner of St. Georges Avenue and Lord Street now occupied by Denny’s. What great fish they had! Ah memories!”

If you would like to see your own memories or past material in print for my 2013 columns, please start sending. Hoping to fill the year’s column with readers’ wonderful memories of the area. All are used in the order that I receive them.

If you have your own memories of the past in Middlesex or Union counties, email me at dianenorekharrison@verizon.net or send copies of your material to me c/o CMD Media, 1139 East Jersey St., Suite 503, Elizabeth NJ 07201
