CLARK — All three Kindergarten classes at Valley Road School in Clark recently had an opportunity to participate in Applefest, organized and run annually by kindergarten teacher Adrienne Dubitsky to collect canned food donations. Students in her class along with Meghan Zampella and Megan Luccarelli’s classes brought in apple-related items and got to sell them to older grade students.
Students brought in food items such as homemade apple-shaped chocolates or apple-filled donuts or goods such as apple-shaped magnets or apple water bottles. These students were the shopkeepers. They put their items out on the table in front of them and sold them. One item cost one canned food item. Older students were allowed to bring two cans and get two apple-related items. The items collected were then donated to the local food drive.
Kindergarten students enjoyed interacting with the older students and having ownership over their items. Students learned about why we need to donate and volunteer and that helping others is important to do all year round.
