EDISON — World-renowned photographer Harvey Stein will present an illustrated talk on his book, “Coney Island: 40 Years” at Middlesex County College on Monday, Nov. 5. The program is from 5-7 p.m. in the Corral Restaurant on the top floor of the College Center on the Edison campus. It is free and open to the public.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to observe a photographer with an extensive, fulfilling and successful career in photography,” said Nadine Heller, chair of the Department of Visual, Performing and Media Arts. “In addition to showing work from his recent publications, Harvey will discuss aspects of portraiture, documentary photography, and the importance of working on long-term projects. He will also talk about his book on Harlem due to be published next year.”
Stein is a professional photographer, teacher, lecturer, curator and author based in New York City. He currently teaches at the International Center of Photography and in the graduate digital program at the School of Visual Arts. He is a frequent lecturer on photography both in the United States and abroad. He serves as director of photography at Umbrella Arts Gallery, located in the East Village of Manhattan and has been a member of the faculty of the New School University, Drew University, Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Bridgeport. In addition, he teaches a number of well-regarded workshops in the U.S. and around the world.
Stein’s photographs have been published in such periodicals as The New Yorker, Time, Life, Esquire, American Heritage, Smithsonian, The New York Times, Reader’s Digest, Glamour, Forbes, Psychology Today, Playboy, Harpers and many others.
His other books of photographs are “Parallels: A Look at Twins,” E.P. Dutton (1978); “Artists Observed,” Harry Abrams, Inc. (1986); “Coney Island,” W.W. Norton, Inc. (1998); and “Movimento: Glimpses of Italian Street Life,” (Gangemi Editore, Rome).
