EDISON — Every time Wardlaw-Hartridge School Valentina Margiotiello scores a goal for the rest of the 2012 soccer season, she will break her own school record. Margiotiello, of Colonia, scored her 62nd career goal during the Oct. 13 home victory over Calvary Christian to break a record held by her former teammate Samantha Barbeito, who graduated in 2011.

“I still can’t believe it,” Margiotiello said. “It’s an amazing feeling. I remember when Sam broke the record and it never even crossed my mind that I could do it. It’s crazy.”

Margiottiello used her great speed to break the record. She received a pass in midfield and raced past the defense for a breakaway against the goalkeeper. She made a quick move and knocked the ball into the net for the record-breaking goal.

“Valentina is a huge piece of our program. I hold her at a very high standard on a daily basis and expect a lot from her,” head coach Jackie MacLean said. “Her whole team looks to her as a leader on and off the field. I often tell Val she needs to set the tone of a game and she takes that role very seriously.”

Margiotiello scored five goals in the game, one shy of her school record for a single game set last season vs. Timothy Christian School. Although she leads the team in scoring and receives plenty of glory, she shares her accomplishments with her teammates.

“None of this would be possible without my team,” she said. “The team is amazing. It’s an awesome support system.”

Valentina and the Rams still have the county, prep and state tournaments on tap for later this month.
