CRANFORD —The Friends of the Cranford Public Library will host a script-in-hand, staged reading of “Becky’s Makeover,” a new play by Abigail Safran, on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Avenue. The play will be read by members of the Theater Project, a professional theater company currently headquartered in Maplewood.

“Becky’s Makeover” is a gentle comedy in which seventeen-year-old Helen has become obsessed with her digital recording device, and even her rather unconventional family is becoming unnerved to find themselves the subject of her camera’s scrutiny at the most inconvenient moments.

Safran received a B.A. in Contemporary Arts from Ramapo College and an M.F.A. in Stage and Screen Writing from Lesley University. She joined the Theater Project’s Writers’ Workshop in the Spring of 2012. The Theater Project recently won two New Jersey Tony Awards.

The play reading will be followed by a discussion among Safran, the director, the actors, and members of the audience. Admission is free and all are welcome.
