Remembering the Past by Diane Norek HarrisonWOODBRIDGE-Here are some past bar and business names from the different sections of the township. If anyone has more information on anything listed, other bar names, location, food that was once served in old bars or parties that were held in any past bar please send to be used in my column. AVENEL- Black Cat Inn, Club Gennaro and Tyrone’s Bar & Pizzeria both on Super Highway No. 25. The Esquire Lounge on Rahway Ave., Ma Flynn’s Tavern & Restaurant was on Route 25, near the Cloverleaf and Walt’s Inn on Avenel St.

FORDS-Ford’s Recreation Tavern on New Brunswick Ave., Mike’s Tavern; King George Rd., and Varady’s Inn on Fords Ave. Frank’s Tavern was on King George Rd.

ISELIN-In the 1960s was Village Inn Bar and Restaurant on Green St. Oliver’s tavern on Oak Tree Rd. with Frank Tutka as the proprietor in 1947

MENLO PARK TERRACE-Rem Liquor Store on Route 1 and Kelly St. in the 1960s.

SEWAREN-Whitehouse Bar & Grill on West Ave.

AVENEL-Mike’s Subs and DeBonis Department Store on Avenel Ave.


COLONIA-B&F Auto Seat covers was on St. George Ave., Kirby Pine Belt farms on St. George Ave. had fresh eggs-white and brown, all sizes and Tango’s Pizza and Restaurant was on St. George Ave. Colonia Watch Mart was in the Colonia Shopping Plaza.

ISELIN-Ted’s Tailor Shop on Green St. and Town ‘N Country Deli on Oak Tree Road. Lincoln Key Shop on Green St. sold Schwinn bikes. Klein’s 5 and 10 was on Oak Tree Road.

PORT READING-Hi Lite Hairdressers was on Port Reading Ave.
