CLARK — Students in Cristina Faro’s seventh grade mathematics classes at Carl H. Kumpf School in Clark got to show their creative side when constructing a colorful number line. The students have been studying ordering rational numbers in mathematics. During the past week, each student has been individually practicing how to plot rational numbers such as fractions, decimals, and whole numbers.
During this activity, students were each assigned a letter of the alphabet with a corresponding rational number. They were to become the expert for the number and research where it was to be placed on the number line. Students collaborated with others and were eventually called to the master number line one-by-one to plot their number using a post-it note. Throughout the activity, students debated the placement of each rational number until a class-wide decision was made. The students enjoyed being able to teach the class about their rational number and creating a colorful display for the classroom.
