PERTH AMBOY – Police arrested two city men on Friday evening after observing them in an alleged narcotics transaction.
Jose Manuel Tejeiro, 34, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine over a ½ ounce with the intent to distribute (a second degree crime), possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone (Richardson Elementary School) and within 500 feet of a public housing complex (Hansen Senior Apartments), and distribution of cocaine. Judge George Boyd set his bail at $75,000 with no 10% option. Raphael Rodriguez, 39, was charged with possession of cocaine.
Members of the Perth Amboy Police Department’s Special Investigations Bureau were on patrol near the 300 block of Gifford Street when they observed Tejeiro pull into the driveway of Rodriguez’s home and hand him two small items in exchange for cash. When the detectives approached the men, they found Rodriguez in possession of two bags of cocaine and place him under arrest, officials said.
Tejeiro attempted to get away by recklessly driving the vehicle into the rear of the driveway, striking some lawn furniture and narrowly missing a parked vehicle, according to police. Tejeiro was arrested shortly after and was discovered to be in possession of 36 additional bags of cocaine (weighing a total of approximately 20 grams) that were packaged for individual sale along with $1,553 in currency that was seized.
Detective Carlos Rodriguez led the investigation.
The charges against the defendants are merely accusations; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
