Composting Workshops Planned

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Middlesex County residents can learn how to reduce waste and improve their soil by composting yard waste and kitchen scraps in their backyards. An overview of this waste- reducing technique will be presented at two free composting seminars held at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Avenue South Brunswick. Classes will run approximately 2 hours.

A Backyard Composting workshop will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m., and a Vermi-Composting (using worms) workshop is planned for Monday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m.

The Backyard Composting seminar will introduce attendees to the basics of composting kitchen scraps and yard waste through the use of bins outdoors. But those who don’t have a backyard because they live in a condo or apartment can also compost by letting the worms do the work. Vermi-composting is the process of letting small worms process your compostables, and the EARTH Center will have a workshop dedicated to teaching that process.

Call the Middlesex County Division of Solid Waste Management at 1-732-745-4170 or e-mail to register for the free workshops. Workshop attendees may also pick up pre-purchased compost bins at the workshops. Call the Solid Waste office for a list of available compost bins.

At the EARTH Center, besides learning about composting, county residents can purchase soil test kits, pesticide application test manuals or submit pest & disease samples.
