NEWARK – Detectives from the New Jersey State Police Street Gang Unit foiled an alleged drug deal yesterday while they were conducting surveillance in the area of Chester Avenue.

While troopers attempting to apprehend both suspects, Eston Lawson, 43, of East Orange, fled on foot and allegedly pulled a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun from his waistband. After a brief foot chase, Lawson was captured. The second suspect, Matthew Muller, 23, of Rutherford, was quickly captured and admitted to swallowing two bags of heroin, according to a State Police spokesman.

A search of Lawson’s vehicle revealed 18 hypodermic syringes and an additional six bags of heroin,  authorities said.

Lawson was charged with possession of heroin, possession of drugs with intent to distribute, possession of drugs within 1000 feet of a school zone, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a concealed dangerous weapon, illegal possession a firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a drug transaction. He was lodged in Essex County Jail on $75,000 bail.

Muller was charged with possession of heroin, loitering and destruction of evidence. He was released pending a court appearance.

The charges are merely accusations and the suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty
