PERTH AMBOY – Police arrested two suspects who allegedly stole roofing material from a business on Sayre Avenue last week.
Marcellyn Diaz, 48, was charged with burglary and receiving stolen property, while Margarita Cruz was charged with receiving stolen property.
Officer Jeff Kuchie and Detective Bryan Kelleher were dispatched to Chris Anderson Roofing to investigate a burglary report at 7:28 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30. They reviewed video footage from the previous day and observed a man they identified as Diaz throwing seven roofing rolls over the fence. The officers observed the male suspect and a female suspect place the rolls in the trunk of the vehicle. While reviewing the video, the officers also observed the same suspect throw a leaf blower over the fence a week earlier, authorities said.
Police obtained an address by checking the vehicle registration. When they went to investigate, they found the vehicle with roofing rolls inside in plain view, authorities said. The officers encountered Cruz at the residence and identified her as the driver seen in the video footage. Police arrested both Cruz and Diaz.
Judge Maria Del Valle-Koch set Diaz’s bail at $50,000 with no 10 percent option. Cruz was released on her own recognizance.
The leaf blower is valued at $1,300 and the roof rolls are valued at $200 each, according to authorities.
The charges against the suspects are merely accusations; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
