EDISON – Edison police, with the assistance of F.B.I. agents, arrested a suspect last week in a pair of recent armed robberies.

Just after midnight on Thursday, Aug. 30, authorities located Sonny R. Augusto, 22, at a Garfield Street resident in Edison. According to police, the suspect ran, but was apprehended after a foot chase and a brief struggle with officers. Augusto is charged with two counts of robbery and weapons possession, as well as resisting arrest. He is currently being held at Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $250,000 bail.

“I am very proud of the detectives and officers involved in this investigation and ultimate apprehension of the suspect, Sonny Augusto,” said Edison Chief of Police Thomas Bryan. “This is a perfect example of hard work and perseverance in tracking this man down before someone gets seriously injured by his actions.”

Police believe that Augusto is responsible for robberies at the Gulf Gas Station on Inman Avenue on Aug. 24 and at J&G Beauty Supply on Wood Avenue on Aug. 29.

The Edison Police Department has been in contact with various law enforcement agencies throughout Middlesex, Union, and Essex counties. In addition to the two Edison robberies, nine similar robberies are currently under investigation elsewhere.

Detective Sean Forker led the investigation.

The charges against Augusto are merely accusations; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
