Remembering the Past by Diane Norek Harrisonby Diane Norek Harrison

RAHWAY-This is from material given to me many years ago before I started writing Union County “Remembering The Past” columns. There is no date on the material.

Sargent’s Men’s Shop at 1541 Main Street in Rahway was once the Old Peace Tavern. The building went up in the late 1700s. The three-story frame structure, now brick faced, is the same outline as it was in the 1700s. They had a reception for Marquis de Lafayette here and according to history, it also held town meeting here. The decision to name Rahway “Rahway” was made here in this building.

If you have your own memories of the past in Middlesex or Union counties, email me at dianenorekharrison@juno.com or send copies of your past material to me c/o CMD Media, 1139 East Jersey St., Suite 503, Elizabeth NJ, 07201
