PERTH AMBOY – A bar security guard was arrested for assault when a police officer observed him allegedly pick up a man off the ground and slam him on the pavement just after midnight today.

Christopher Middleton of North Brunswick was charged with simple assault and released, and the victim was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Officer David Formeza was on patrol and observed a fight in front of Las Palmeras Bar on Madison Avenue. The officer saw Middleton allegedly strike the victim in the head while the victim was on the ground. Formeza pushed through the crowd and ordered Middleton to back up, and he complied.

The victim was unable to speak and appeared dazed, according to police.

The charge against Middleton is merely an accusation; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
