PERTH AMBOY – On Sunday afternoon, an off-duty Perth Amboy Police officer apprehended an alleged burglar.

Police were dispatched to the area of Hanson Avenue on Aug. 12 at 1:27 p.m. When they arrived, off-duty Police Officer Robert Estrada had a burglary suspect, later identified as Fredin Acevedo, 32, in custody.

The burglary victim told police that he noticed the door leading to his basement was open and items were missing from his Hanson Avenue home. A basement window had been forced open. Acevedo had been spotted on the property carrying a tool bag that had belonged to the victim, according to police. A witness had also seen that individual walking around earlier in the day, according to police.

Estrada chased after Acevedo and apprehended him. Acevedo was charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools. Judge George M. Boyd set bail at $50,000, with no 10 percent option.

The charges against Acevedo are merely accusations; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
