OPINION: Disappointed By Councilmen’s Decision Not To Run

It was with a heavy heart that I read that Fernando Gonzalez and Kenneth Balut will not be seeking second terms as councilmen. They were stalwart legislators with the welfare of the city residents their top priority. They will be missed!

I consider Mr. Gonzalez the best councilman since Fred Richards. Fernando is as articulate and analytical in his comments. Both were outspoken and more understandable than most lawyers or politicians. Although Fred was also a brilliant lawyer… Fred left this city for greener pastures down South!

However I cannot agree with the negative voiced about our beloved Mayor Wilda Diaz. She was elected by a wide margin over the previous mayor before he was indicted. The mess he left the city was not only a hole but an abyss! Bankruptcy stared us in the face as it did and does in Stockton, Calif. But by her actions and hard work, Wilda steered this city in the right direction towards salvation and recovery! A most attractive lady who speaks from the heart, she has brought charm, dignity and hope to this beleaguered city by the bay!

The challengers are fine and successful residents. But they will probably cancel each other out and our Wilda will win in a landslide.
