CARTERET–The Office of Carteret Mayor Daniel Reiman will host a candlelight vigil for the victims of the mass shooting that took place in a Sikh Gudwara on Aug. 5 in Oak Creek, Wisc. The memorial service will begin at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 12, in front of the Memorial Municipal Building at 61 Cooke Avenue.

Reiman, members of the Borough Council, and local Sikh community leaders will join with residents and visitors for an evening of solemn remembrance, to acknowledge those whose lives were lost.

“The Borough Council and I extend our deepest condolences to those in Oak Creek,” Reiman said. “While any shooting is tragic, murdering individuals in a place of worship is especially depraved. My thoughts and prayers are with the Sikh community. As a country we will come together to remember those who were lost, and to acknowledge that which defines America – our diversity, and the richness of ideas and traditions that emerge from the inalienable freedoms we have been given.”

Carteret is home to the largest concentration of Sikhs, per capita, in New Jersey.

“Our Sikh neighbors have become an important part of Carteret,” Reiman added. “They work, shop and live beside us and ask nothing but to be accepted a members of our community. They represent what is best about Carteret, people from different backgrounds working together to provide a better quality of life for all our residents.”
