EDISON — Plays-in-the-Park, located in Roosevelt Park in Edison, will present “Grease” as the final show of the Summer 2012 season under the stars. “Grease” will open on Aug. 1, and will run through Aug. 11, with no show on Sunday, Aug. 5. Come see the Pink Ladies and T-Birds hand jive their way through Rydell High.
“What better way to end our 50th Anniversary year with one of the most popular musicals to ever hit the stage,” said Freeholder Stephen J. “Pete” Dalina, chair of the county’s Infrastructure Management Committee, which oversees the Parks and Recreation Office. ”Go back in time as Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Kenicke and the gang dance and sing through the trials and tribulations of teen love and friendship.”
This classic musical was written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, both of whom also created the music and lyrics. It’s full of great toe-tapping songs including “Summer Nights,” “Born to Hand Jive” and “We Go Together.”
The original Broadway production opened on June 7, 1972 at The Broadhurst Theatre. It holds the place as 14th longest-running Broadway show to date. It was so popular that it has had two Broadway revivals, multiple tours, two runs on London’s West End, a hit movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, and countless performances at the regional and community theatre levels.
The production at Plays-in-the-Park is directed by John Menter, choreographed by Amanda Grace and musically directed by Larry Rothweiler.
“Bring your family and friends to our beautiful park and enjoy this fantastic production,” said Freeholder Director Christopher D. Rafano. “This is truly family entertainment at its best!”
Tickets can only be purchased the night of the performance. The Box Office opens at 5:30 p.m. each night. The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and free for children 12 and under, cash only.
