Ice Cream Social Adds Sweetness to the Hospital Stay For Pediatric Patients

NEWARK –The Child Life Department at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center held its annual “Ice Cream Social” on Wednesday, July 18, which included Pediatric Units A5 and C5.

It was the 13th annual social to be held and sponsored by the Bass Foundation, a New Jersey-based organization dedicated to helping people in need throughout the community. The Bass Foundation takes the Child Life Department staff shopping to Toys ‘R Us the day before the social for a toy shopping spree and then throws a party for the patients, families and staff. They also brought volunteers to create ice cream sundaes and give gifts to the children.

“The social is a unique event and something that the patients appreciate each summer,” says Anne Reilly, MS, CCLS, Director of the Child Life Department. “It is a sweet treat for all of our patients and families, and anything that brings a smile is good medicine.”
