Newark Shooting Victim Was Linden Councilman’s Cousin

NEWARK – A 21-year-old Newark man was fatally shot early Sunday morning on Harding Street, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Kendal Spear is the cousin of two Linden elected officials, Councilman Derek Armstead and school board member Lisa Ormon.

According to the prosecutor’s office, police responded to reports of a shooting in the area of 35 Harding Street shortly before 1 a.m. on July 15 and found two gunshot victims. Spear was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 1:12 a.m. The second victim, whose identity was not released, was taken for treatment of wounds that were not considered life-threatening.

Spear was a graduate of Newark Arts High School and had been attending an automotive school in Orlando, Fla., but had recently returned home to surprise his girlfriend, according to a report published by NJ.com.
