JERSEY CITY — Saint Peter’s Preparatory School celebrated its 134th Commencement at Saint Peter’s College on Sunday, June 9. Of the 223 graduates, several are local residents.
Berkeley Heights: Patrick Carney, son of Melinda and Timothy Carney, will attend John Carroll University. While at Prep, Patrick participated in Lacrosse and Marauder Nation, Prep’s spirit club. He was a member of the Campus Ministry Team and attended and led the Emmaus and Kairos Retreats. He was also a member of the big Brothers and won a Spirit Award and the Dorothy Day Award. Colin Freeman, son of Lauren and Brian Freeman, will attend University of Delaware. Both Patrick and Colin were consistent Honor Roll students at Prep. Colin played Lacrosse at Prep for four years and was a member of Pax Christi, Prep’s service club. He attended Emmaus and Kairos retreats and was a member of Marauder Nation.
Fanwood: Jacob Dombroski, son of Tress Ann and Charles Dombroski, will attend Philadelphia University. A consistent Honor Roll student and member of the Art Club, Jacob also won the Silver Medal in Art. While at Prep, Jacob participated in Cross Country, Track, and Rugby as well as intramural sports. He attended both the Emmaus and Kairos retreats and made a mission trip to West Virginia with Habitat for Humanity.
Hillside: Garland Green, son of Earlene and Garland Green, will attend Bethune-Cookman University. While at Prep, he played football and basketball and was a member of the Ebony Club. Ronald Robinson, Jr., son of Shelby and Ronald Robinson, Sr., will attend Delaware State University. He played football at Prep and was a member of the Ebony Club.
Mountainside: Matthew Apicella, son of Laura and Francis Apicella, will attend The College of the Holy Cross. Matthew played football for four years at Prep and was a member of Marauder Nation, the Petrean and Petroc, the Microfinance Bank and the Baseball Club. Michael McGee, son of Diane and Thomas McGee, will attend Saint Joseph’s University. Michael was the Marauder, the head of Prep’s spirit club, Marauder Nation. He was a member of the Campus Minsitry Team and he participated in bowling, baseball, basketball, football and rugby.
Plainfield: Ryan Baird, son of Renee and Robert Baird, will attend Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Ryan played soccer and basketball at Prep and participated in retreats. Kieran Duffy, son of Ingrid and John Duffy, will attend Rider University. At Prep, he played soccer and ran indoor track and participated in the Emmaus and Kairos retreats. Nathaniel Hilliman, son of Janet and Dorrell Hilliman, will attend William Paterson University. Nathaniel played football and ran indoor and outdoor track and was a member of the Ebony Club.
Rahway: Daniel Kelly, Cum Laude, son of Maria and Michael Kelly, will attend Seton Hall University. While at Prep, Daniel, a consistent Honor Roll student, participated in Mock Trial, TV Studio, Art Club, Gaming Club and the History Club (President). Brandon Napoleon, son of Tracey and Eugene Napoleon, will attend West Virginia University. Brandon participated in football all four years at Prep.
Roselle Park: Joseph Wozniak, son of Maureen Zachowski and Joseph Wozniak, will attend New York Institute of Technology. While at Prep, Joseph participated in the Stock Market Club and the Computer Club.
Sayreville: Dennis Long, son of Elaine Zadroga-Long and Dennis Long, will attend Nassau Community College. Dennis was a four-year member of the football team at Prep.
Springfield: Patrick Coyle, son of Kathleen and Patrick Coyle, will attend University of Maryland, College Park. While at Prep Patrick was a consistent Honor Roll student and was a member of the Campus Ministry Team and many clubs. He was the captain of the Crew team and also played football and rugby. Christian Schmidt, Cum Laude, son of Denice and Matthew Schmidt, will attend Georgetown University. At graduation, Christian, a consistent Honor Roll student, was named a Scholar/Athlete. Christian was also selected to deliver the graduation speech to his classmates. For this honor, he was presented the Vincent J. Kennedy, ’39 Award as the speaker for the Class of 2012. While at Prep, Christian was a member of the football and rugby teams as well as the Campus Ministry Team.
Summit: Robert Butko, son of Sheila and Dan Butko, will attend Amherst College. At Prep, Robert was the captain of the lacrosse and water polo teams and also played soccer and hockey. He was on the Campus Ministry Team and chaired the Mission Drive as a senior. Kyle Candela, son of Elizabeth and Vincent Candela, will attend Johns Hopkins University. Kyle was on the Academic Bowl Team and the Campus Ministry Team. He participated in the Engineering Club, Petroc, Gaming Club, and Marauder Nation. Dante Colucci, son of Anne Marie and Dean Colucci, will attend Gustavus Adolphus College. At Prep, he was captain of the swim team and ran Cross Country and Track and wrested. He was also a member of the Engineering Club and the Italian Club. Michael Lizza, son of Sandra and Charles Lizza, will attend the University of Chicago. He played lacrosse, hockey, and soccer at Prep. Michael was a member of the Stock Market Club, the Medical Club, the Microfinance Bank and Pax Christi. Joseph Scott, son of Shelly and William Scott, will attend Case Western Reserve University. Joseph was president of the Engineering Club and was a member of the Stock Market Club. He also participated in cross country and golf. Owen Sutton, son of Jennifer and Owen Sutton, will attend Marquette University. Owen ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track and also participated in the Engineering Club, Stock Market Club, and Physics Club.
At graduation, Michael Lizza was awarded the Silver Medal in English. Robert Butko and Michael Lizza received the Scholar/Athlete Award. Robert Butko, Kyle Candela, Michael Lizza, and Joseph Scott graduated Cum Laude. Michael Lizza’s father, Charles Lizza, Prep Class of ’74, presented him with his diploma at graduation. Mr. Lizza is a former chairman of the Board at Prep and father of Michael, ‘12
Union: Gregory Kearney, Cum Laude, son of Deborah and Kevin Kearney, will attend Fordham University. Gregory was president of the Chess Club and a member of the Campus Ministry Team. He participated in the Petroc, Stage Crew, Model UN, Celtic Club, Classics Club, and was a HAP tutor. Dwayne Singleton, Jr., son of Bernadette and Dwayne Singleton, Sr., will attend University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dwayne was a four-year member of the football team and also ran indoor and outdoor track. He was a member of Marauder Nation.
Westfield: James Doyle, son of Nancy and John Doyle, will attend Saint Joseph’s University. James played hockey at Prep. Michael Giacone, son of Jean and Michael Giacone, will attend Boston College. Michael played football at Prep and was the captain in his senior year. He won the 2012 Hudson County International Athletic League Scholar-Athlete Award. William Hedley, IV, son of Mary Ellen and William Hedley, will attend Saint Joseph’s University. William played football, ran indoor track and played Rugby. He was a member of the Campus Ministry Team and Big Brothers. Kevin Larkin, son of Karen and Kevin Larkin, will attend East Stroudsburg University. Kevin played soccer and rugby at Prep and ran indoor track. He was a member of both the Anime and the Gaming clubs. Martin Monaco, son of Margeret Monaco and Martin Monaco, will attend Franklin and Marshall College. He played football and lacrosse and was captain of the lacrosse team. He also participated in Campus Ministry retreats. Anthony Pafumi, son of Paula and Sal Pafumi, will attend Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He played football and wrestled at Prep and participated in the Emmaus Retreat. Robert Slaski, son of Carolyn and Robert Slaski, will attend Emerson College. Robert had the lead role in many Prep plays. He played tennis, was a member of Marauder Nation, and attended the Emmaus and Kairos retreats. Alexander Williams, son of Sharon Williams and Stuart Williams, will attend the University of Scranton. Alexander played football and lacrosse and attended the Emmaus retreat.
