RAHWAY – Rahway Flag Rugby announces the inaugural MudTurtle Rugby @ Rahway Tournament on Saturday, July 21, to be held at Green Field on Madison Avenue, Rahway. Teams will compete in four divisions ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade. Games begin at 9 a.m. and will continue to 2 p.m.
Teams have been invited from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New York, as well as local New Jersey teams. In lieu of paying a registration fee, the teams will make a charitable donation to a Rahway-based food bank. Over 300 participants are expected.
In the rugby community, the home team is expected to provide post-game refreshments and food. This year, Rahway Flag Rugby will provide coffee, water, sports drinks, bagels, muffins, breakfast bars, watermelon, and oranges.
A 50/50 raffle is planned, with prizes to include tickets to the Union County Performing Arts Center and other items.
A commemorative t-shirt will be available for $15
Rahway Flag Rugby is sponsored through a grant by Investors Savings Bank and was established in 2011. The team has grown from 18 players to almost 50 players. The team is part of the Union County-based Mudturtle Youth Flag Rugby program. Other teams in the program are Berkeley Heights, Cranford, and Westfield. The program has over 500 children competing.
