RAHWAY — From Latin to Caribbean to Soul, Rahway has it all this summer with the best fist-pumping, heart pounding bands in the New Jersey music scene. Mayor Rick Proctor, the Rahway City Council and the Department of Parks and Recreation have announced a lineup of concerts that begin on Aug. 9 and continue every Thursday evening through Aug. 30 (weather permitting). The concert stage in the “Back Stage Lot” of the Union County Performing Arts Center is in the heart of the Rahway Arts District. Audiences are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to these free shows.

The series kicks off on Aug. 9 with the David Cedeno Orchestra and a sizzling variety of music including Latin Jazz, salsa, meringue, and ballads. Believing that music was made to be shared, David has rearranged some popular English hits buy adding a Latin salsa beat while still keeping the original lyrics in English. These titles include “Lady in Red,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Somewhere” and “Sealed with a Kiss.” His success stretches far beyond the borders of the United States and has opened a gate for other Latin performers to attempt a crossover and introduce their music to America.

On Thursday, Aug. 16, you’ll find yourself right in the middle of a spontaneous party when The Funktion takes the stage. This 10-piece band includes hip horns, a rock solid rhythm section and lead vocalists that are nothing short of amazing. They deliver powerful, dynamic renditions of soul, 70s – 80s, Funk and Disco, 90s dance classics, and the hottest pop tunes of today.

Back by popular demand, Parrotbeach returns to Rahway on Aug. 23. One of the few full time Jimmy Buffett tribute bands, this group has over 107 years of combined musical experience from live performances to the art of studio recording. Whether you’re a Parrothead or just a beach lover, you’ll be in for the time of your life. Doing the best of Jimmy Buffett along with your all time favorite island tunes, Parrotbeach will take you back to that unforgettable Caribbean vacation.

The concert series wraps for the season on Thursday, Aug. 30 with New Jersey’s quintessential classic rock and soul band, Jobonanno and the Godsons. Since 1992 this band has been electrifying the tri-state area’s rock clubs and concert halls with its infectious style of “Hi-Energy Get Up And Dance Rock and Soul”. Voted one of the top-ten Jersey bands by News 12 New Jersey, they have opened shows for Bruce Springsteen, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, The B-52’s, Joan Jett, Marshall Tucker, Gary U.S. Bonds, The Monkees, and Beaver Brown, and have been joined on-stage numerous times by Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen.

All concerts start at 7 p.m. and will be moved indoors in the event of rain. For more information, call the Department of Parks and Recreation at 1-732-669-3600.
