LINDEN — After a joint investigation by detectives from Linden, Springfield, and Mountainside, Linden police have charged Michael Ayler, 45, who has addresses in Elizabeth and Neptune, on counts of attempted burglary, criminal mischief, and possession of burglary tools.
Ayler is suspected of attempting to burglarize Pied Piper Liquors, 613 W. Edgar Rd. in the Aviation Plaza shopping mall on May 28 at approximately 11:30 p.m. A video surveillance camera captured images of a man prying the front door and then backing his vehicle into a shopping cart trying to push the cart through the door. He fled after his attempt was unsuccessful.
Linden detective Edward Adams distributed an information bulletin to other law enforcement agencies and was soon contacted by detectives from Springfield and Mountainside who had similar burglaries in commercial areas. Based on evidence collected at all three burglary scenes, detectives identified Ayler as the suspect.
On June 20, armed with arrest warrants, detectives from the three municipalities fanned out across the region looking for Ayler. He was eventually located at the Plainfield municipal jail where he was served with the new charges. Bail for the Linden burglary is set at $50,000 cash only.
Detectives credited the inter-agency cooperation and sharing of information for the success of this investigation.
