New Jersey State AFL-CIO Holds Convention, Announces Endorsements

ATLANTIC CITY – Nearly 700 delegates, representing 1,000 labor unions and the one-million union members of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO, convened at Bally’s Atlantic City on June 12 and 13, for the purpose of officer elections and political endorsements. Convention delegates voted unanimously to re-elect President Charles Wowkanech, Secretary-Treasurer Laurel Brennan, and all members of the Executive Board.

The keynote address was delivered by national AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, who shared a vision of creating good jobs, safeguarding collective bargaining rights, and fighting for policies that benefit the 99% of our country. UA Secretary Treasurer Mark McManus and New Jersey Democratic State Chairman John Wisniewski were among those who spoke at the Convention.

Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc., board members Ludi Hughes, Jerome Harris, and Dr. Nuran Nabi, outlined the importance of community partnerships to advancing a pro-working families agenda in our state and discussed the continued mission of this statewide grassroots coalition, which includes voter registration and education as well as mobilization around the issues concerning New Jersey’s middle class.

Convention delegates also commemorated the 50 year anniversary of the New Jersey AFL and CIO merger, which took place on September, 25, 1961. The event was punctuated by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to be placed in the Rutgers University Labor Education Center and a presentation on the history of the state labor movement delivered by Dr. Mike Merrill, Dean, Harry Van Arsdale, Jr. Center for Labor Studies, SUNY Empire State College.
