On Tuesday, Democrats and Republicans chose their parties’ nominees for a variety of local offices, Congress, and the U.S. Senate, as well as delegates for this summer’s Presidential nominating conventions.
Mitt Romney won 81 percent of the vote in the GOP’s Presidential primary. Former challengers Ron Paul, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich all appeared on the ballot even though they have suspended their campaigns.
Donald Payne Jr. won the Democratic nomination for the 10th District House of Representatives seat that had been held by his father for 23 years, while Rep. Bill Pascrell defeated Rep. Steve Rothman in the 9th District Democratic primary that pitted two incumbents against each other.
U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez won an uncontested Democratic primary, and will face Republican state Sen. Joe Kyrillos in November. (Click here for more details about New Jersey’s Congressional primaries.)
In local races, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage overwhelmingly defeated former city planner Oscar Ocasio in the Democratic primary, while organization-backed city council candidates defeated a slate of challengers in Rahway’s Democratic primary.
