Two Union Catholic Students Named Scholar-Athletes

SCOTCH PLAINS—Seniors Dave Schanz of Edison and Gabrielle Aquino of Rahway were recently named Union Catholic High School’s UCIAC (Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) Scholar-Athletes for the 2011-2012 school year.

Schanz has been awarded six varsity letters throughout his high school career, two for basketball and four for baseball. He was named All-Conference 1st team in grades 10,11, 12; All-County 3rd team grade 10; All-County 1st team grade 11; and All-State grade 11. He eagerly awaits the titles he might be given after this spring season.

Schanz has also been an integral member of SMAC (Student Movement Against Cancer) all four years and served on the Executive Board in grades 10,11,12; has been part of the Big Brother/Big Sister program in grades 10,11,12; a Student Ambassador in grades 10,11, 12; and has been a member of UC’s Service Club all four years, to name just a few of his commitments at Union Catholic. He will be attending SUNY Binghamton in the fall on a D1 scholarship for baseball.

Aquino has been awarded five varsity letters throughout high school, three for lacrosse and two for volleyball. She made honorable mention All-conference in 2011 and was the setter on the volleyball team that won two Union County Conference and County Championships during her varsity career. Gabrielle was a member of the Student Council (Vice President as a junior and President as a senior); member of the Academic Team in grades 9,10,11,12; member of the National Honor Society in grades 11,12; member of the Filipino Club all four years, and member of the Service Club all four years, to name a few. She will be attending Boston College in the fall.
