SCOTCH PLAINS — On May 2, Union Catholic High School held its annual May Crowning Ceremony. Sister Irma Gazzillo organized the event so that the entire senior class was present and reflective. Those in attendance sang “Immaculate Mary” and “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman,” as seniors Timothy Dalton of Metuchen and Katherine Treventi of Murray Hill crowned the Blessed Mother statue in the main foyer, and Christian Fernandez of Edison and Yolande Edme of Linden crowned Our Lady of Grace on the front lawn of the school.
Throughout the ceremony, seniors read scripture passages, intercessions, and reflections. One special reading was written by Scotch Plains resident Phyllis M. Biunno, who composed a poem about the statue of Our Lady of Grace in front of Union Catholic after passing it many times on her daily walks. The poem is entitled, “A Reflection on Passing by…” and is on display in the school’s main foyer.
