TRENTON – An ongoing municipal sewer repair project will require overnight closures of Route 28 (Westfield Avenue) westbound between Magie Avenue and Elmora Avenue (Route 439) for approximately three weeks in Elizabeth.
Beginning on or about Tuesday, May 29, the municipal contractor will close Route 28 westbound at Magie Avenue each weekday night from 8 p.m. until around 5 a.m. the following morning, for highway excavation operations.
Route 28 westbound motorists will be directed to take Magie Avenue to Elmora Avenue back to Route 28.
Route 28 will be open in both directions during daytime hours. The contractor has been utilizing similar overnight closures of Route 28 eastbound since March.
Additionally, a full weekend closure of the Route 28 intersection with Elmora Avenue is scheduled from 8 p.m. Friday, June 8 through around 5 a.m. on Sunday, June 10. Motorists will utilize the local roadway system to detour around the intersection.
The work is being performed under a regional utility permit allowing the city’s contractor access to the state highway to make the necessary underground sewer modifications.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
