SOUTH AMBOY-In 1971, H. Oppenheim and Son, that used to be on Broadway, had an ad “Let Us Help You Celebrate Memorial Day-all picnic supplies, paper and plastic, cups, plates, forks, spoon, etc. SHOP AT OPPIE’S”

A Memorial Day Parade was held on May 31, 1976. Marchers assembled in Sacred Heart parking lot. Sacred Heart Catholic War Veterans Post No. 578 sponsored the parade with Adam Rzepka as assistant chairman and Chester Jankowski as grand marshal. Gold Star Mothers joined local veterans’ organizations in the place of honor in the line of march. South Amboy Fire Department, First Aid Squad, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts made up the parade.

The American Legion Band of Carteret provided music for the marchers and the Sayreville VFW Post Firing Squad gave the memorial salute. A memorial service was held at City Hall after the parade.
