SPRINGFIELD — “BORKFEST“ is the title of a memorial concert/reunion event for alumni of Abraham Clark High School (ACHS) and Union County Band and Orchestra Summer School (UCBOSS) bands at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, at the Liberty Church, 242 Shunpike Road, Springfield.
The current members of the Whitehouse Wind Symphony based in Somerville, under the direction of Casey Bork Jr., who are alumni of ACHS and UCBOSS, announced the upcoming concert in memory of Casey Bork Sr. This multi-purpose event entitled “BORKFEST” will take place at the Liberty Church on Shunpike Road in Springfield and will include a rehearsal starting at 11 a.m. and will conclude with a concert at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 9th.
The event will celebrate the memory of Casey Bork Sr. (1918 – 1983) who served as the supervisor of music in the Roselle Public Schools and the conductor of bands at Abraham Clark High School (ACHS) in Roselle for many years from the 1950s until his retirement in 1978. Casey Bork Sr. also served as the director of the Union County Band and Orchestra Summer School (UCBOSS) taking over from his father, Virgil W. Bork, who founded the school in 1933.
While honoring the memory of this outstanding music educator and remembering the life of this extraordinary musician, this event will also serve as a reunion for any musician who has ever played under a “BORK” baton (VW Bork, Casey Bork Sr. or Casey Bork Jr.). If you are a musician who played with any of the following groups: Union County Band and Orchestra Summer School (UCBOSS), Roselle’s Abraham Clark High School bands (ACHS), Union County Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Conservatory of Music and Arts (ECMA), Rutgers University Bands ‘62-’66, various Big Bands (Stoeppel/Hurst, Billion Dollar Sound, Bunny Berigan’s band, Lee Castle Orchestra, Frankie Carle Orchestra,), any NJ All-State or Region Ensemble conducted by Casey Bork Sr., Centennary College Symphonic Band (Hackettstown), Whitehouse Wind Symphony (WWS), Imperial Music Center Band (South River), or the Tewksbury Schools you are invited to participate in “BORKFEST.”
Alumni of any group formerly conducted by a “Mr. Bork” who are still active musicians are encouraged to come and play in this concert. A rehearsal will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with a reunion break for lunch between 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. and a concert at 3 p.m. Those who are alumni but who no longer play their instruments are invited to the lunch/reunion and the concert. Come to hear many of the “old favorites” such as the marches “Greater Clarksburg March” and “UCBOSS March” composed by Casey Bork Sr.’s father and the founder of UCBOSS, Virgil W. Bork, along with many other traditional favorites such as Universal Judgment and Zampa.
All participants are asked to send their contact information and register their intent to attend or play by sending an email to: BORKFEST2012@gmail.com
Musicians who wish to play should indicate their instrument in the email. Alumni or their family members who are not playing but who wish to attend the lunch/reunion and concert should also send an email to indicate that and reserve a lunch meal ($10 per person). Musicians and concert attendees will be encouraged to give a donation during a freewill collection to defer costs. Any funds donated in excess of costs will be shared between the non-profit Whitehouse Wind Symphony and the Liberty Church. For more information call Casey Bork Jr., ECMA director, at 1-908-439-9979.
