Trinitas CEO Makes NJ Top Exec List & Is Named Man Of The Year

ELIZABETH — Gary S. Horan, FACHE, president & Chief Executive Officer of Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, has been named to the elite group of the Top 50 hospital executives in New Jersey as recognized by NJBIZ in their annual Power 50 Healthcare listing.

In its rankings, NJBIZ lauded Horan for his success in directing the operations of Trinitas which serves the residents of New Jersey’s fourth largest city and its surrounding communities. “Gary Horan has handled the more difficult challenges an urban hospital faces while keeping his facility nonprofit.” Trinitas Regional Medical Center “has grown and become financially stronger in Elizabeth under his leadership. … a great job at an inner-city hospital,” says one insider. He also is “a very good, personable and charismatic leader.”

Horan has also been named Man of the Year by the Irish Business Association of New Jersey. Founded in 2008 by New Jersey business professionals and business owners, the organization recognizes outstanding individuals from among the more than 1.3 million New Jerseyans of Irish descent for their contributions to the vitality of the state.

Horan joined Trinitas Hospital as President and Chief Executive Officer in July, 2001. He assumed that role just a year following the consolidation in January, 2000 of Elizabeth’s two hospitals, Elizabeth General Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital. During his years at the helm, the services of the facility have grown, new physicians have become affiliated with the institution, Trinitas Centers of Excellence have achieved numerous awards and recognitions, and investments in surgical and other equipment enhancements have assured quality patient care. In 2008, the facility was renamed Trinitas Regional Medical Center to reflect more accurately its place as a healthcare provider in the Central New Jersey region.

From 1990 to 2001, Horan served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Our Lady of Mercy Healthcare System, Inc., Bronx, New York. Previously, he served as Vice President of Hospital Operations for New York University Medical Center, and as Executive Vice President of St. Vincent’s Medical Center of Richmond, New York.

Within healthcare, Horan is past Chairman of the Hospital Alliance of NJ as well as past Chairman of the Greater NY Hospital Association. He was elected to the Board of the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) in 2010. He also serves on the Board of the NJHA Health Research Education Trust and on the Board of the Catholic Healthcare Partnership of New Jersey. In 2007, Horan was named a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is currently a Fellow of that organization. In the wider business community, Horan is a member of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Global MBA Advisory Board at Kean University, and a member of the Union County College Board of Governors.

A resident of Sea Girt, New Jersey, Horan earned his BS degree in Economics from St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, and his MA degree in Health Care Administration from The George Washington University, School of Government and Business, Department of Health Care Administration, Washington. D.C.
