SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will present a Build a Rain Barrel workshop next month. Participants will build their own rain barrel and learn how to install it at home. A rain barrel is placed under a gutter’s downspout next to a house, to collect rainwater from the roof.

The Build a Rain Barrel Workshop will take place on Wednesday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the EARTH Center, Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave, South Brunswick. A $45 per person payment is required in advance of workshop; no payments will be accepted at the door. Call 1-732-398-5273 to register.

All tools and materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own power drill and one inch hole saw. Barrels can be placed lying down in the backseat of most four-door vehicles to be transported home. Be sure to make arrangements in advance to transport your barrel.

The barrel holds about 50 gallons of water that can be used to water gardens. Rainwater collection can help conserve water, prevent basement flooding, and reduce flooding and pollution in local rivers and streams. Rain barrels sell for over $100 at specialty garden shops.
