NEWARK – Improving access to the many commuter bus lines serving the Route 9 corridor could increase transit use and reduce congestion along the highway, according to the Route 9 Corridor Transit Linkages Study, conducted by Middlesex County with funding from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA).
Currently, ample bus service along Route 9 connects Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties with employment centers in New York City and other points north. However, gaps in the local services feeding this regional transit corridor led Middlesex County to explore options for increasing mobility between residential neighborhoods and regional transit.
To address these gaps, the study focused primarily on enhancing local shuttle services to capture currently underserved neighborhoods in Old Bridge and Sayreville that would likely support new transit routes or modifications. For example, the study calls for modifying existing bus routes or adding new routes to serve key residential areas and local housing developments, such as the Winding Wood Apartments in Sayreville.
“This study points to a number of quick-fix and long-term improvements that could make our transportation system work better for commuters,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Stephen Dalina, a member of the NJTPA Board of Trustees. “Offering residents convenient, safe and efficient public transportation to jobs also improves quality of life in Middlesex County.”

Research for the project concluded in 2011, and a final study report was recently released and posted online. The NJTPA’s Subregional Studies Program provides federal grants every two years on a competitive basis to the 13 counties and two cities represented by the NJTPA Board. Studies include an analysis of existing and future conditions in a particular area or transportation system, as well as strategies for improvements. Strategies are developed and refined into detailed concepts that can advance to implementation phases involving appropriate agencies (such as counties, municipalities, the Department of Transportation, etc.)
